“…And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
Matthew 6:13 ESV

The Greek translated as temptation also means a trial or proving, something serving as a test.[1] Temptations ask: Who do you serve? Where does your loyalty stand? What do you believe?

Trials and tests are open doors for evil to tempt with an illegitimate way out from under what God allows. So Jesus teaches His disciples to ask His Father to lead them around the temptations of trials. He tells them to pray for deliverance – freedom – from the evil infiltrating such times.

When trials do come, and temptation lurks, remember it is only a test. One allowed for your good and God’s glory.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
James 4:7 ESV

Think about temptations you face as trials or tests of proving. What comes to mind?

How does it change your understanding of God? the world? you?

Ask God for the faith to submit to His Way no matter the temptation.
